| While most users of this guide will not be
involved in the construction of new buildings, it may be useful to take a look at the
ideal characteristics for such a building and the facilities it houses. |
What would be the ideal building for housing a MRF
operation?
| The requirements for a facility housing a metal removal operation vary
according to the size of the operation, the size of the parts, the number and variety of
processes, and production levels. Ideally, |
 | The building should have ceilings high enough to allow good air mixing. |
 | Machines should be spaced so that MRF emissions do not concentrate in a location. |
 | Floors should be sloped to allow fluid flow and easy and efficient cleaning. |
| The building must also be well ventilated, particularly since the amount
of fresh air brought into the building can affect employee MRF exposures. |
What ventilation
does the building need?
A good ventilation system would have the following characteristics:
 | adequate size to replace the amount of air that is being exhausted from the building |
 | air supply evenly distributed throughout the building |
 | emission source controls not disrupted by the velocity and direction of supply air |
 | intakes located well away from process exhaust |
 | filtering of outside or recirculated air |
